Why We Built a Better Page Builder for Ecommerce

Building a modern ecommerce website shouldn't require you to be a frontend developer.

Yet, if you've ever tried to customize an ecommerce storefront, you've probably encountered the same problem: what looks like a simple page builder can quickly become a complicated maze of containers, columns, settings, responsive controls, and custom CSS.

That's why we built EverShop Page Builder.

Our goal isn't to create another generic drag-and-drop website builder. We want to make it easy for ecommerce store owners and developers to create beautiful, flexible storefront pages while keeping the underlying complexity out of the way.

The Problem with Ecommerce Page Builders

Many page builders promise:

"Just drag and drop."

But once you start building a real page, things can become complicated very quickly.

You may have to deal with:

  • Too many configuration options
  • Complicated layouts
  • Responsive design issues
  • Inconsistent spacing and styling
  • Difficult-to-maintain pages
  • Limited ecommerce-specific components
  • Custom HTML and CSS

The problem isn't that these tools aren't powerful enough.

In many cases, the problem is that they expose too much complexity to the person building the page.

A store owner shouldn't have to understand CSS grids, flexbox, breakpoints, or HTML structure just to create a promotional landing page.

Creating an ecommerce page should be about deciding what you want to show, not figuring out how to implement it.

Our Philosophy: Simple, Flexible, and Ecommerce-Focused

When we started designing EverShop Page Builder, we wanted to avoid the same problems.

We didn't want to build another generic website designer.

Instead, we wanted to build a page builder specifically designed around ecommerce.

Simple

Store owners shouldn't need to become frontend developers just to customize their storefront.

The interface should be easy to understand, and the most common tasks should require only a few clicks.

Flexible

At the same time, simplicity shouldn't mean that every store looks the same.

Users should be able to combine different sections and customize them to create pages that fit their brand and business.

Ecommerce-Native

Most importantly, the page builder should understand ecommerce.

Products, categories, collections, promotions, and other ecommerce data shouldn't feel like external content that has to be manually inserted into a generic website builder.

They should be first-class building blocks.

Our goal is simple:

Give merchants the flexibility they need without exposing unnecessary technical complexity.

Introducing EverShop Page Builder

EverShop Page Builder gives store owners a visual way to create and customize storefront pages using reusable content blocks — without writing code.

Instead of building every page from scratch, you can compose a page using ready-to-use blocks and configure each block according to your needs.

The basic workflow is simple:

  • Add a block
  • Configure its content
  • Arrange the blocks
  • Preview the page
  • Publish

That's it.

You don't have to start with a blank HTML document.

You don't have to build every section from scratch.

You simply combine the building blocks you need.

Build Pages from Reusable Blocks

At the heart of EverShop Page Builder is the concept of blocks.

A block represents a specific piece of content or functionality on your page.

Depending on the blocks available in your EverShop installation, you can build pages using components such as:

  • Hero
  • Product Grid
  • Product List
  • Category List
  • Banner
  • Image
  • Rich Text
  • Featured Products
  • Promotional Sections

Instead of thinking about the technical implementation, you can think about the experience you want to create.

For example:

Hero
↓
Featured Categories
↓
Promotional Banner
↓
Featured Products
↓
Newsletter

Each block can then be configured independently.

This makes it possible to create a wide variety of pages while keeping the editing experience simple.

Designed for Ecommerce, Not Generic Websites

This is one of the most important ideas behind EverShop Page Builder.

A generic website builder might give you building blocks like:

Container
└── Row
└── Column
└── Text
└── Image

This approach gives you a lot of flexibility.

But it also requires you to understand how websites are constructed.

EverShop takes a more ecommerce-oriented approach:

Hero
Product Grid
Categories
Collections
Promotional Banner
Featured Products

The difference may look small, but it changes the entire experience.

Instead of asking:

"How do I create a two-column layout containing an image and some text?"

You can simply think:

"I need a Hero section."

Instead of manually creating product cards, you can create a product section and connect it to your store's catalog.

The page builder handles the underlying implementation.

Your Store's Data Should Be Part of the Page Builder

A major advantage of building a page builder directly into an ecommerce platform is that the page builder can work with the data already available in your store.

Your products are already in EverShop.

Your categories are already in EverShop.

Your collections are already in EverShop.

So why should you have to manually recreate that information inside a page builder?

With EverShop, the page builder can work naturally with your existing ecommerce data.

For example, you can create a product section and configure it to display products from your catalog.

This creates a much more natural relationship between content, layout, and commerce.

Create More Than Just a Homepage

A page builder shouldn't only be useful for creating a homepage.

With EverShop Page Builder, you can create different types of pages depending on what your store needs.

Campaign Page

The same building blocks can be combined in different ways to create completely different experiences.

Customize Without the Complexity

A good page builder should give you control where it matters without forcing you to become a frontend developer.

That's why we don't believe that exposing every possible CSS property automatically makes a page builder better.

In fact, it can make the experience worse.

Instead, EverShop focuses on giving you useful controls for configuring each block while keeping the underlying implementation out of sight.

You should be able to focus on things like:

  • What content should appear?
  • Which products should be displayed?
  • Which image should be used?
  • How should the section look?
  • Where should the section appear?

The system can take care of the technical details underneath.

Built on EverShop's Modular Architecture

EverShop Page Builder isn't an isolated visual editor.

It's built directly into the EverShop ecosystem and works alongside the existing ecommerce functionality.

Conceptually, the architecture looks like this:

EverShop
│
├── Products
├── Categories
├── Collections
├── Orders
├── Customers
├── CMS
└── Page Builder
├── Blocks
├── Layout
└── Rendering

This allows the page builder to work naturally with the rest of the platform.

More importantly, EverShop's modular architecture gives us a foundation to continue expanding the page builder over time.

New blocks and capabilities can be added without turning the entire system into one giant, tightly coupled editor.

From Idea to Published Page

Let's take a simple example.

Imagine that you want to create a landing page for a new summer campaign.

With a traditional approach, you might need to ask a developer to create the page, implement the layout, connect the products, make it responsive, and deploy it.

With EverShop Page Builder, the workflow can be much simpler.

Step 1: Create a New Page

Start with a new page from the EverShop admin panel.

Step 2: Add a Hero Section

Add a Hero block and configure the heading, image, description, and call-to-action.

Step 3: Add Your Products

Add a product section and select the products, category, or collection you want to feature.

Step 4: Add Promotional Content

Add a banner or another content block to highlight your campaign.

Step 5: Arrange Your Sections

Put the blocks in the order you want them to appear.

Step 6: Preview

Check how your page looks before publishing.

Step 7: Publish

Once you're happy with the result, publish the page.

What previously might have required a developer can now be handled directly from the EverShop admin interface.

Built for Both Store Owners and Developers

While simplicity is important, we also don't want to hide the power of EverShop from developers.

EverShop is an open-source ecommerce platform, and we believe developers should be able to extend the platform rather than being limited to whatever functionality comes out of the box.

That's why Page Builder is designed as part of EverShop's modular ecosystem.

As the system evolves, developers can build new blocks and capabilities that extend what merchants can do with the builder.

This creates an important relationship:

Developers
↓
Build new capabilities
↓
Page Builder
↓
Merchants create better storefronts

The result is a page-building system that can grow with the EverShop ecosystem.

This Is Just the Beginning

The first release of EverShop Page Builder is only the beginning.

There is still a lot we want to do.

As we continue developing the feature, we're exploring areas such as:

  • More ecommerce-specific blocks
  • More customization options
  • Reusable sections
  • Page templates
  • Theme integration
  • More advanced layouts
  • Better responsive controls
  • A growing ecosystem of extensions

But we want to stay true to the original idea.

We don't want to create another complicated drag-and-drop editor where users have to understand how websites are built before they can build one.

We want to create a powerful but approachable page-building system designed specifically for ecommerce.
